DFW: The Fish Story

The Fish Story

Let me share an anecdote of two young fish swimming along when they encounter an older fish. The older fish casually asks, "How's the water?" The young fish, puzzled, respond with the question: "What the h*** is water?" This story serves as a profound metaphor for life. The water symbolizes the surrounding realities that are so integral to our existence that we often overlook them.

The purpose of this story is twofold: it illustrates that the most obvious and important aspects of life are often the most difficult to recognize and appreciate. It also emphasizes that, while commencement speeches often include such parables, I do not perceive myself as the wise fish providing answers. Rather, I wish to highlight the significance of recognizing and understanding the simple truths that we often take for granted.

Importance of Recognizing Reality

In our daily lives, we frequently overlook the most obvious realities. This can lead to a lack of awareness about fundamental truths that shape our existence and decisions. The speaker argues that while many sayings may seem like mere platitudes, they can hold life-or-death importance and relevance in adult life. Acknowledging these simple truths and taking the time to truly understand our environment can be profoundly impactful.

Focus on Liberal Arts Education

A main requirement of this speech is to discuss the intrinsic value of a liberal arts education, which has been widely debated and often misunderstood. It is a common cliché in numerous graduation speeches that "A liberal arts education teaches you how to think." However, I often felt insulted by this phrase as it oversimplifies the profound impact of a liberal education.

In a rapidly changing world, the ability to think critically, communicate effectively, and engage with diverse perspectives is invaluable. A liberal arts education is not merely about acquiring skills; it’s about fostering a mindset that values inquiry, encourages curiosity, and promotes empathy towards others. This holistic approach to education equips graduates with the tools necessary to navigate the complexities of modern life and contribute meaningfully to society.
